PUMP
PUMP’s mission is to make Pittsburgh the most dynamic and diverse place by engaging, educating, and mobilizing all young people to create change in their community. Each year, we serve nearly 30,000 individuals, primarily under the age of 40, through our programming.
Challenge
PUMP has been around since 1996 housing a strong message, but an old interface. When PUMP came to us, they wanted a fresh new logo to represent the times along with integrating their message of community within Pittsburgh. The initial goal for PUMP was to help encourage young and talented people, both those who had lived here all their lives and those who were new to the region, to stay here. Digitally, this message had to transcend, which also meant updating their website.
Solution
To do this correctly, we needed the input of PUMP members and members of the region. We surveyed hundreds of members, interviewed funders, collaborators and stakeholders, and even participated in an interactive message and branding exercise with PUMP’s board. We reached the conclusion that PUMP’s new look and message should represent all of the ways they are involved in Pittsburgh, with special attention to the advocacy and public policy component of what they do.
Results
Within the logo, we elevated the “you” both literally and metaphorically, representing the platform that PUMP aims to provide for members of the community. We chose a friendly, approachable font as a metaphor for their own approachability for everyone in their community. The use of bright colors stands for energy, vibrancy, growth, and community. Our new tagline “Get Active. Be Connected. Create Change.” clearly and plainly explains the three main pillars of PUMP’s programming within the region. We created memorable collateral including stickers, posters, business cards, letterhead and custom notebooks with stickers.
