Top Ten Favorite Candy (That is Not a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup)

by Allison Mathis, October 24, 2023

As promised in our Anniversary Blog post, we’re sharing content around the theme of ten all year.  This month, it’s time to get spooky and sweet. Did you know that last year, the U.S. spent 3.1 billion dollars on Halloween candy?  Just in time for trick-or-treating, here are some of the Shift team’s favorite candy treats to munch on. We took Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups out of the running to give other sweet treats a moment in the spotlight.

P.S. This post isn’t sponsored by Hershey’s, but some of us wish it were.

Ali loves,

M&Ms. They melt in your mouth, not in your hands, plus they have fun merch. I prefer plain, but my favorite way to eat them is mixed in with movie theater popcorn. If I’m hungry and looking for a more robust “snack,” I will gravitate to the Peanut M&Ms because, you know, protein.

Illustration of Anthony

Anthony loves,

Torrone, the Italian nougat filled with nuts. It’s an old person candy, let’s be honest. No one ever gave me any when I was trick-or-treating, but I would never have been mad if they did. It’s most often available around Christmas time, like Turkish delight and panettone, but in comparison, it’s pretty easy to make at home.

Cynthia loves,

A Clark Bar. It’s a spun taffy bar coated in milk chocolate, and it was originally made right here in Pittsburgh, PA. Apparently, it was created to send to troops during World War I. I love that crunchy spun center and the combination of ever-so-slightly-bitter taffy with chocolate. If you can’t get Clark Bars where you are, a Butterfinger or 5th Avenue is very similar.

Gabe loves,

Snickers. It’s the one candy bar that makes me feel like I ate something substantial (which is the dangerous part). It is basically the same as an energy bar, right?

Larissa loves,

Peanut Butter Snickers! Yes, even if I can’t declare that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the best, at least there are other options that let me enjoy the delicious combo of peanut butter and chocolate. Snickers actually go a step beyond the peanut butter cups because these candy squares include peanut butter, peanuts, caramel, and nougat together as one. They really are delicious (even if I’ve been forced to “settle” for them for the purposes of this blog).

Meg loves,

My #1 go-to candy is always Sour Patch Kids. Road trip snack or movie treat are usually (ok, always) what I go for. My definitive ranking is:

  1. Lemon
  2. Orange
  3. Lime
  4. Berry
  5. Raspberry

Michael loves,

Black licorice with an honorable mention to peppermint candy.

Phillip loves,

Take 5 is an underrated Halloween candy. Its unique blend of savory and sweet flavors creates an irresistible combination that’s sure to satisfy your taste buds.

Illustration of Ruby

Ruby loves,

Anything fruity and chewy! Sour Patch Kids, gummy bears, gummy worms—they’re all tasty, and I’m not sure I can choose a favorite.

Sarah loves,

I love anything with caramel and also red licorice. Twix and Rolos topped my list early on, but these days, I tend to stick to organic dark chocolate bars with caramel in them. I have difficulty passing up Twizzler Nibs, though the braided strips are also a favorite.
