All year long we’re sharing content around the theme of ten, as we promised you in our Anniversary Blog post. So far this year we’ve talked about the things we love about working a Shift, as well as our team’s favorite movies.
With warmer weather moving in, we’re packing up our winter garb and preparing to enjoy spring and summer days in Pittsburgh. And that got us thinking: what are some of our favorite places in Pittsburgh to visit?

I love visiting the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. When my kids were younger we visited on a frequent basis. Animals are unpredictable and, as such, every single visit to the zoo is a unique experience. One of my favorite memories there was when my dad was visiting and we took the kids to the zoo and got a group photo with an elephant.

It’s much too difficult to choose a single favorite place in Pittsburgh. However, one place I do enjoy and appreciate is Honeygrow. Honeygrow is an eatery in East Liberty that specializes in salads, stir-fries and fruit-honey desserts. While the food is very good, the main reason I appreciate it is because it’s a place that Shift orders team meals from during company events. We’ve had many good conversations over our Honeygrow bowls and takeout boxes over the years!

When I think of a place that I love, I think of Heinz Hall. I love its ornate decor, its wonderful sound, its outdoor courtyard, its glamorous lower level bathrooms. And I love the wonderful classical and Pops music that the Pittsburgh Symphony performs there, as well as the other terrific shows and entertainment it hosts. Insider tip: Before a concert starts, you can pre-order drinks from the second floor bar for intermission, and then you won’t have to wait in line – plus they’ll save a table for you! It’s a magical place.

It’s hard to pick an absolute favorite place in Pittsburgh, but at the top of the list for me is the Strip District. I love seeing all the vendors and people out and about early on Saturday mornings. It’s one of the few places left that is truly “old school Pittsburgh.”

I love visiting The Butterwood Bake Consortium (say that five times fast)! This cozy dessert cafe serves up a rotating menu of cakes, pies, and cookies. Their vegan and gluten free desserts are just as good as the standard options, which means I can bring any of my friends knowing they’ll enjoy something on the menu. To get the full experience you need to visit during a sunny day in Pittsburgh (rare though those are). Order dessert and a beverage (coffee or tea), and then take your order out to their back patio and enjoy!
Meg says,
I love the Andy Warhol Museum, and specifically the Andy Warhol’s Silver Clouds room and display. Sometimes I watch the clouds bounce off each other and the walls. Sometimes I wander around and interact with them. It is simultaneously meditative and peaceful, and joyful and energetic.
Michael says,
I’m a big fan of farmer’s markets and local markets. That includes the seasonal Market Square vendors, the numerous Strip District stores, and the various neighborhood markets that pop up during this part of the year. Part of the joy of Pittsburgh is the variety of cultures and foods that we can explore and access. All these shopping options are in my list of top places to visit in Pittsburgh because they ensure people like me can keep experiencing that joy.
Ruby says,
This is a hard one because I love so many spots in Pittsburgh! With the weather warming up, I’m really looking forward to dining outdoors again at places like Lawrenceville’s Over Eden rooftop – which has a city view – as well as Bakersfield on Penn Avenue in the Cultural District. There’s something about soaking in the city while eating good food surrounded by others enjoying the same thing that I can’t get enough of.
Sarah says,
One of my favorite places to go year-round is Hartwood Acres. It’s a place where I can let my mind wander, breathe in fresh air, watch my dog romp around untethered, and take in a free concert. It’s also close to my home which makes it convenient to get to any time of the year.
We Also Love Working in Pittsburgh
This was a hard list to work on. If you ask us to name a favorite place in Pittsburgh again in a month or two, some of us would probably have different answers. But that’s part of the joy of living in the ‘Burgh — there are numerous things to visit, do, and experience!
An honorable mention for Favorite Place in Pittsburgh is, of course, our own office. Shift’s offices are in East Liberty, and we love being able to work, dine, and play in Pittsburgh. It’s also our pleasure to work on website, design, branding, campaign or marketing projects in Pittsburgh (and beyond!).
